While not everybody might be a fan of Nicholas Cage movies, his acting performance can't possibly affect the number of pool drownings in the US, right? Well, it doesn't! It is just a wonderful example of a spurious correlation. And in my opinion, also a hilarious one!
As our brains love to make sense of our world by making associations, it's worth knowing that sometimes we are just plain wrong. Correlation doesn't mean causation and the examples of Tyler Vigen beautifully illustrate this (https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations).
